Croydon has become home to HM Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC) first regional centre, which was officially opened this morning.
1 Ruskin Square is the first of the government department’s 13 new state-of-the-art regional centres to welcome staff.
The 184,000 square feet of office space located next to East Croydon station, will be home to 2,700 HMRC employees by 2021. Around 600 members of staff, who were already based in Croydon town centre, have moved to the new building from Southern House.
HMRC says the new office will enable them to become one of the most digitally-advanced tax authorities in the world and staff will be able to collaborate more easily and effectively. The department also believes it will become an important contributor to the economy and communities in and around Croydon.
Edward Troup, HMRC’s executive chair said: “This building is a great place to work. Ultimately, bringing teams together gives us the opportunity to work differently and more effectively, and that is part of making HMRC a tax authority fit for the future.”
