October is Black History Month, and as ever Croydon has a range of events that allow people to celebrate the important role that black culture plays in modern life.
This year’s focus is on black institutions that have been actively leading their communities in the borough for 10 or more years.
The programme will include opportunities to discover historical events through performance, music, storytelling and song, and also by taking part in thought-provoking discussions.
Black History Month helps remember people, places and events from the African Diaspora that have made an historical impact, as well as highlighting those who are making history today

Lorna Liverpool: the Central Library welcomes back Lorna Liverpool as she launches her new book The Hidden Treasures Within. Join Lorna for readings, crafts and special guests. For families with children aged 7 and under (Croydon Central Library, Saturday 7 October, Noon – 2pm).
Secrets of the 1817 Slave Registers Uncovered: historian Paul Crooks captivates his audience with his account of how he traced his African forebears enslaved on a sugar plantation in Jamaica (Croydon Central Library, Saturday 7 October, 2pm – 3pm).
Unlocking the greatness within you with Barbara Allen: an informative inspiring, educational and compelling creative writing session for children and adults (Thornton Heath Library, Saturday 7 October, 2pm – 2.45pm).
Black Futures UK Presents a Day of Culture: come along and share in a day celebrating the rich culture of Africa (Project B, 3-7 Middle Street, Saturday 7 October, 1pm – 7pm).
The Ministry of Empowerment Black History Month Gospel Extravaganza: an evening filled with uplifting live gospel music (Braithwaite Hall, Katharine Street, Tuesday 10 October, 6.30pm – 9.00pm).
