Free dance events come to Croydon’s town centre next week

Saturday 14 October sees two spectacular free dance performances take place alongside each other in Croydon’s town centre.

Dance Umbrella, London’s annual London-wide contemporary dance festival, is coming to Croydon to present Origami, a spectacular heavy metal pairing of a shipping container and a gravity defying dancer

Created by Paris-based Satchie Noro and Silvain Ohl and with music by Fred Costa, Origami is an outdoor event, suitable for everyone.

Inspired by the Japanese art of paper folding, this 40 minute show in The Queen’s Gardens is a breath-holding spectacle where the container gently unfurls, creating a three dimensional geometric performance space for dancer, Satchie Noro.

There will be two performances, with the first show at 1.30pm and the second at 6.30pm.

Between these times Dance Festival Croydon will be held in the Braithwaite Hall within the Clocktower complex.

The free festival is a celebration of contemporary dance curated by Anusha Subramanyam and Vipul Sangoi of Beeja, a dance-based organisation committed to work inspired by life’s choreography.

Running from 2.30 to 6pm, the festival promises a programme of exciting contemporary dance performances by both national and local companies.

Artists include Archana Ballal, BRIT School, Corali, Magpie, Saturday Storytellers, Shane Shambhu, Shivaangee Agrawal, Slide, Tom O’Gorman and Vinicus Salles. There will also be screenings of dance films in the David Lean Cinema from 4.15-6pm.

Cllr-Godfrey “Having Dance Umbrella come to Croydon is a real treat. Their work is internationally recognised and this is just another example of what will be in store for us in 2019 if we are made London’s first Borough of Culture. I’m really pleased the Dance Festival will be using the beautiful Braithwaite Hall and I hope this will be start of more regular shows taking advantage of this amazing space.”

Councillor Timothy Godfrey, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport
