School celebrates new zebra crossing

An academy’s drive to get a zebra crossing to make pupils safer on their walk to school has led to Croydon Council installing one for the autumn term.

Staff and pupils at Robert Fitzroy Academy and local residents can now use the zebra crossing on Davidson Road after the council approved the school’s £20,000 funding application that was backed by parents and ward councillors.

Funding for the project came as part of an annual budget given to the council by Transport for London for local road improvements.

Year 5 pupil Saryta Halls said: “It’s a busy street and there needs to be somewhere safe for the children to cross.”

Michelle Rosemond, the school’s headteacher, said: “I am simply thrilled to have a zebra crossing outside our school. I am convinced that this has protected lives – not only of the children and families of the Robert Fitzroy Academy but neighbouring schools and the community as a whole. This is testament to the school’s community of parents whose dedication to this project has made it a reality.”

“Anything that encourages our residents to walk more, especially during the school run, is good for their well-being and the local environment, so I’m pleased we were able to deliver this crossing for Robert Fitzroy Academy and its neighbours.”
