A call of the wild to Croydon kids

Children in Croydon have been tasked with completing a series of unique challenges to win a prize this summer – encouraging them to get down with nature on their doorstep and explore the great outdoors.

Primary school pupils have each received an eye-catching Go Wild Croydon activity booklet from Croydon Council with 30 things to do outdoors in the borough – from flying a kite and making a daisy-chain to holding a scary mini-beast and going on a night time wildlife walk.

The most adventurous children who complete all 30 challenges will be given a small prize. In addition, all those who take part and attempt at least some of the tasks can become an official Croydon outdoor explorer and will receive a certificate for their efforts.

The Croydon outdoor explorer network strives to reconnect children, young people, families and communities with the wonders of local nature.

The Go Wild Croydon booklet includes advice to ensure children play safely while outdoors and encourages the whole family to participate. There are also several family-focused events listed in the booklet to help the children tick off some of the challenges.

The events start with London National Park City Week from 21-29 July. This is the first event of its kind in the capital with activities all week long to celebrate London’s unique green spaces, trees, waterways and natural environment.

Being busy in the fresh air can be hungry and thirsty work too and Go Wild Croydon has a few top tips to help children to be sugar smart and choose healthier food and drinks while they are on the go.

“This summer we want to inspire all children and families to go outdoors and delve into the wild and green side of Croydon. The borough boasts 127 parks and open spaces with heathland, lakes, chalk meadows and ancient woodland, and we are home to a wide variety of wildlife, trees and flowers. We hope that the Go Wild Croydon booklet gives confidence and guidance to anyone who wants to explore Croydon’s flourishing fauna and flora.”
