Almost 2,000 new school places for Croydon

Croydon Council is funding almost 2,000 extra school places over the next three years to meet growing demand in the borough.

Next Monday the council’s Cabinet will consider proposals to add 30 pupils per year group at eight primary schools in the borough from September, or 960 pupils over three years.

At secondary level, 900 new places will be created when the Oasis Arena academy opens in September. More expansions are on the cards at Archbishop Lanfranc in 2016 and the new ARK free school in 2017.

If next week’s proposals are approved, the first primary schools due for expansion in September 2015 are:

• Chestnut Park, Croydon
• West Thornton Academy annexe
• Oasis Fairfield, Croydon
• Heathfield Academy Spices Yard
• Gonville Academy (for one year only)
• Heavers Farm Primary (for one year only)
• Christ Church C of E in Purley (for one year only)
• Chipstead Valley Primary (for one year only)

Monday’s meeting will also outline the extra places already agreed at last July’s Cabinet for children with Special Educational Needs. Feasibility studies are underway to provide 106 extra places for children aged four to 11 from next September, split between pupils with specific learning difficulties and those with social, emotional and mental health difficulties.

“With Croydon set to get even bigger thanks to major regeneration projects, we are planning ahead so our booming borough has enough school places for every primary and secondary pupil.”

Councillor Alisa Flemming, cabinet member for children, families and learning
