Apply for secondary school places by 31 October

Parents of year six pupils have until the end of this month to complete and submit secondary school applications for children starting in September 2018.

Families with a child aged 11, or who will be 11 before 31 August 2018, must apply for their secondary school place by 31 October 2017. Details of the application process, with step-by-step instructions, can be found on the council’s website, and in the Admission to Secondary Schools 2018/19 prospectus.

Families should use all six preferences and consider them carefully before submitting the form. To be offered a place, a child must meet the admissions criteria of the school. If the child does not get their first or second choices, the council needs to know which schools would be their other choice. Without this information, families could be offered a school that they would not have chosen.

Families will receive details of their secondary school offer by email on the evening of 1 March 2018.

“The transition to secondary school is a really exciting time in a young person’s life, but making a decision about where to send them and applying for a place can be daunting for many families. Parents can play a huge role in helping to make it less overwhelming for their children, by ensuring that their application is properly completed, reasonable in its expectations and submitted on time.

“We are delivering a school place for every child, but it’s important to get your application in on time in order to be considered for your preferred schools.”

Councillor Alisa Flemming, cabinet member for children, young people and learning
