ASB leads to flat closure at Weldon Court

Illegal drug use, fights, excessive noise and making neighbours fear for their safety have led to Croydon’s antisocial behaviour (asb) team being granted a three-month closure order for a council property in Thornton Heath.

The closure order for 11 Weldon Court, Brigstock Road, obtained at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 13 July, lasts until 13 October, and follows an investigation by the asb team into a number of complaints about the behaviour residents had endured

Local police had made contact with the council in June to advise of the serious nature of the allegations about behaviour at the premises.

The tenant attended court and denied the allegations, but the magistrate granted the closure order to ensure the alleged behaviour stopped.

Councillor Hamida Ali, cabinet member for communities, safety and justice

“Antisocial behaviour by the tenant at his address, and the surrounding areas, left other residents feeling incredibly distressed and at times afraid for their safety.

“This will give residents some well-deserved respite from the antisocial behaviour they were subjected by this tenant and his visitors.”

In addition to the closure order, the asb team is progressing and pursuing possession action for the breach of council tenancy conditions. This is the first legal step in the council seeking possession of the property from the tenant.

If a possession order is granted, it could lead to the tenant’s permanent eviction from the property. Where a tenant is evicted due to antisocial behaviour taking place at their property, the council may not have a duty to rehouse.
