Calling all super pets – this is your chance to save the planet

Dutiful dogs and committed cats – as well as their owners – are being called to help save the planet, as a new recycling collection scheme gets under way in Croydon.

Pet food sachets can now be sent off for recycling after the council worked with Croydon Friends of the Earth to launch a pilot scheme in Waddon.

Used sachets can now be deposited in a new recycling bin at Morrisons supermarket on Fiveways. The waste will then be sent to Terracycle, a recycling company, to be turned into plastic fence posts and benches.

The new recycling bin is one of 146 sites across the country that accepts wet pet food pouches, all pet treat flexible plastic packaging and pouches and all dry pet food flexible plastic packaging.

The pilot could be rolled out to other sites across Croydon if it goes well, and the borough’s pampered pets help do their bit for the environment.

“I know my cat, Archie is glad he can do his bit to help the environment and I’m happy to have worked with Friends of the Earth to offer this new service for residents and their purrfect pets.

“Every sachet collected secures points that our partners, Cats Protection Mitcham, can exchange for funding. So please, if you have a pet, help them be a superhero by recycling their waste food packaging.”

Councillor Stuart Collins, deputy leader – Clean Green Croydon
