Undeterred by the recent snowfall, volunteers came together this weekend to take part in the Great British Spring Clean 2018.
Two events took place in the borough, with a community clean–up at Long Lane Woodlands in Addiscombe on Saturday, and the Green Mile Project, which aimed to make the area from West Croydon station to Thornton Heath pond greener, taking place on Sunday.
Both events were supported by Croydon Council as part of its Don’t Mess With Croydon – Take Pride campaign.
Saturday’s clean-up was organised by the London Wildlife Trust and saw six local residents clear the snow covered woodland, collecting historic fly tipping and litter that had been dumped at the site.
The community work together to fill planters in Thornton Heath
The second event for the weekend saw 30 residents and community members fill planters made from recycled pallets at West Croydon and then litter pick, as they walked the mile to Thornton Heath Pond where a second planter was planted by community members and local councillors. The group filled over 20 bags of litter on their walk.
The event which finished with drinks and cupcakes at Thornton Heath pond, linked several projects including Croydon Station Energy Garden, Thornton Heath Community Action Team and Broad Green Residents’ Association and was led by the association’s chair and Street Champion Malcolm Bell.

“Keeping Croydon clean and tidy is one of the council’s priorities and I’m grateful so many local people braved the cold to take part in these two events. We will continue with our Don’t Mess With Croydon – Take Pride campaign and I’d encourage as many residents as possible to join our street champions and volunteers and take part in future Spring Clean events.”
