Construction work to start regenerating Coulsdon

Works are due to start on redeveloping Lion Green Road car park in Coulsdon next week, which is a major part of the town centre’s regeneration.

The site will provide a new Waitrose supermarket, a community space, storage for First Coulsdon Scouts and replacement car parking.

The car park closes on Sunday, 19 July, with works beginning the following day. Alternative short stay car parking is available with full details below and online.

The first phase of works will see an extensive archaeological survey take place which will include a number of “trial pits” dug for investigation for any historic remains.

In addition there will be clearance of site infrastructure such as lampposts and pay and display machines.

Construction of the main development will then start later this year and is due for completion in autumn next year.

It will include 190 short stay car parking spaces with parking free for up to two hours.

Alternative parking

There is currently short stay on-street parking in Coulsdon town centre, free 90 minute parking at Aldi, and long stay parking at Coulsdon South station which has 71 parking bays with two disabled spaces.

The closest council car parks with long stay available are:

• Reedham station which offers 54 long stay parking spaces
• Purley multi-storey car park that provides a total of 412 parking bays

The council is also looking at using the existing CALAT car park in Chipstead Valley Road for temporary medium stay parking.

“The redevelopment of Lion Green Road car park is a major part of the regeneration of Coulsdon town centre.

“While we acknowledge that the closure of the car park may cause inconvenience to some motorists, there are alternative parking options available nearby, and we are working on providing more spaces.

“When the redevelopment is complete, there will be 190 short stay spaces which will help support businesses in Coulsdon.”

Councillor Kathy Bee, cabinet member for transport and environment
