An ambitious set of priorities to deliver further improvements for Croydon’s residents and businesses until 2022 is set to be discussed at the cabinet meeting on Monday 11 June.
Over the last four years, Croydon Council has introduced a range of initiatives to improve the lives of its residents, from boosting economic growth to supporting families.
These initiatives have included:
• Creating the Gateway division that has helped prevent homelessness for hundreds of families and cut by 19% the number of households in emergency accommodation
• Setting up developer Brick by Brick to deliver 65% affordable and market-rent homes
• Investing £30 million in a major upgrade to Fairfield Halls
• The building of eight brand new schools
• Croydon Works, a jobs brokerage that has supported over 500 people into employment
• Investing in a state-of-the-art Legacy youth zone for children across the borough
• Launching the Choose Your Future campaign to improve the prospects of Croydon youngsters
• The introduction of borough-wide 20mph speed limits
• Prosecuting almost 200 offenders to date under the Don’t Mess With Croydon – Take Pride campaign
• Major investment in district centres including Thornton Heath and South Norwood
• Launching the One Croydon Alliance with local NHS and Age UK Croydon to promote more independence among people with chronic health conditions
• Becoming a London Living Wage borough
• Bringing the library service back in-house
Following the Croydon local election results announced on 4 May, the council has set out its key priorities that will form the basis of the next Corporate Plan. Themes include Providing Decent And Safe Homes For All, focusing on planning good-quality homes that local people want to buy or rent; A Healthier Croydon, which will promote physical and mental wellbeing; and One Borough – Many Places, which focuses on improving local neighbourhoods.
Proposed new measures being introduced in this new electoral period include investing in 400 electric vehicle charging points, extending the Good Employer charter, aiming to hit a 50% recycling target, and giving community groups the chance to take over empty shops.
“With major inward investment, superb transport links and massive regeneration, Croydon is a growing success story and this council plays a central role.
“From providing affordable homes to the new Fairfield Halls, we are already achieving a lot but there is so much more to do for our residents.
“This plan sets out our ambitions over the next four years, how we will deliver them with our partners and how we will make sure no-one in our borough is left behind in that success, especially by widening access to jobs, training and homes.”
