Council appeal for donations to boost personal protective equipment supply

Croydon Council is appealing to local businesses for donations of personal protective equipment (PPE), to boost its supplies and help protect the borough’s frontline health and social care workers.

The council is working hard to source additional supplies for the hundreds of carers that are continuing to deliver much-needed health, social care and support to some of Croydon’s most vulnerable residents.

There is a national shortage of PPE and although some supplies have reached Croydon, delivery of such vital items is slow. The council is asking local businesses that may have protective equipment, to sell or donate the items so it can ensure both carers and residents can continue to do their important frontline work at this challenging time.

The council would welcome supplies of the following sealed equipment: face masks, disposable plastic or latex gloves, plastic aprons, disposable eye protection, overshoes and sanitising gel; and is also willing to purchase items, particularly if available in bulk.

Any supplies donated or sold will need to be delivered to Bernard Weatherill House where they will be shared between staff working in health and social care for the council and its partners, including care providers across the borough. The council is willing to collect bulk supplies from those unable to deliver, and this can be arranged by emailing PPErequests@croydon.gov.uk

Earlier this week, Councillor Tony Newman, joined other local authority leaders in writing to the Government, urging them to make delivering PPE to councils a priority, and to do so quickly.

“We are of course aware there is a national issue with PPE supply and have called on the Government to do what they must to resolve this as a matter of urgency. It is absolutely vital that Croydon’s key workers and those who need PPE to safely do their jobs, receive the equipment as soon as possible. This will also help workers and the residents they are caring for minimise the spread of coronavirus.

“In the meantime, if Croydon’s business community could donate or sell to the council any unused protective equipment to supplement what we’ll receive from Government, it would be very gratefully received by us and those on the frontline who need it the most.”

Any businesses able to donate or sell PPE to the council should email their supply details including quantity, location including postcode; and a contact telephone number to PPErequests@croydon.gov.uk
