Council leader’s response to OFC interim report

Reaction of Councillor Tony Newman, leader of Croydon Council, to the Opportunity and Fairness Commission’s interim report, published Thursday 15 October 2015.

Cllr-Newman“One of the earliest decisions of this administration was to set up an independent Opportunity and Fairness Commission to fully understand and identify the barriers that prevent opportunity and fairness across our borough – be they in matters of community, prosperity and employment, our young people, homes, health, or life opportunity.

“In a climate of severe funding cuts from central government, local government continues to have to meet increasing levels of demand with ever-reducing resources. In the face of shrinking budgets, services are having to be continually evaluated and realigned. The commission will help us to better understand where most difference can be made for our residents.

“The interim report is a thorough and interesting assessment of our situation, offering a number of thought-provoking suggestions for consideration.

“I’d like to thank the commissioners themselves; everybody who supported them; and all those who voiced their opinions and played a part in bringing the interim report together, making a valuable contribution to the rapidly changing landscape of Croydon.

“We look forward to working with our partners across the borough in examining, and giving due consideration to, the recommendations.”
