Council statement on police mergers

Croydon Council has made the following statement following the Met’s announcement to change local policing by merging boroughs to form 12 Basic Command Units (BCUs) – Croydon will now join forces with Bromley and Sutton.

Councillor Hamida Ali, cabinet member for communities, safety and justice, said: “While we believe Croydon is best served by a stand-alone borough commander and borough command unit, we recognise the pressure the Met is under in terms of budget cuts and will do all we can to ensure the new proposals are a success.”

Council leader, Tony Newman, added: “As the council leader, my priority is the safety of all our residents, so we will continue to work with the borough commander, Chief Superintendent Jeff Boothe, to ensure that, as these changes are implemented, there is no detrimental impact on Croydon.”
