This year’s celebration of the best planning projects nationwide will include two Croydon Council finalists – including one for its new guidance on how best to develop suburban areas.
The 2019 Planning Awards recognise the year’s best achievements in the development industry, from project designs and individual people’s successes to large-scale regeneration schemes.
Of the 26 awards on offer, Croydon Council is a finalist in two categories; Planning for Increased Housing Delivery and Planning Permission of the Year.
The council has reached the final of the Planning for Increased Housing Delivery category for its Suburban Design Guide, which sets out “innovative” guidance created by the spatial planning service to assist developers and their architects when intensifying existing suburban neighbourhoods in the borough. Welcomed as the first of its kind by the Greater London Authority, the draft document – known as SPD2 – has already prompted other local authorities to plan similar guidance.
Croydon’s other nomination is for Planning Permission of the Year, alongside developer Greystar Europe, Tide Construction and HTA Design LLP, for its role in approving Europe’s tallest modular building at 101 George Street. The 44-storey, 546-home tower complex is currently under construction and will be Europe’s tallest building whose components have been made and assembled off site.
“These awards celebrate the sector’s most visionary projects and talented professionals nationwide, so for the council to be a finalist in two awards is a real feather in our cap.
“If you add to that list the nomination for Hub’s redevelopment of the council’s former Taberner House site and The Queen’s Gardens, it underlines the high-quality developments being delivered in Croydon whether we win on the night or not.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony held at the Royal Institute of British Architects on 4 June.
