Croydon apprentices celebrated at National Apprenticeship Week event

Apprentices working with council contractors on a range of Croydon projects were commended at a special event held as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

Nine apprentices working for council housing and schools maintenance contractors Clairglow and Mulalley, were each presented with a certificate and gift card, in recognition of their hard work on local schemes.
The apprentices’ contributions have been across three contracts and they have been involved in planned maintenance works including the delivering of kitchen and bathroom refurbishments, external decorating and domestic central heating upgrades.

As well as the work carried out for their employers, the apprentices have also been involved in a number of community initiatives including the renovation of Timebridge Community Centre in New Addington for the FareShare food programme and decorating for the New Addington Pathfinders community group and at the Salvation Army’s food bank.

Councillor Alison Butler, cabinet member for homes, regeneration and planning, and Councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed, cabinet member for economy and jobs, both attended the event and praised the apprentices’ contributions and commitment.

“I am delighted we have been able to recognise the invaluable contribution apprentices are making across Croydon, not just in their work but also in the wider community. Those here today should be very proud of themselves.”

Keen to make sure learning-on-the-job opportunities are made available to local job seekers, Croydon Council has not only ensured its contractor partners recruit apprentices, but has also committed to employing apprentices directly through its own apprenticeship scheme.

The council is currently recruiting its second apprentice cohort offering real career opportunities across all sectors to anyone aged 16 or over, and living or studying in Croydon.

“Employers often find apprenticeships are a fantastic way of future-proofing their business, bringing new ideas and ways of working into the workplace. The council is committed to supporting Croydon’s young people into work and apprenticeships are a fantastic way for someone to earn while they learn, develop their knowledge and skills and gain experience in the world of work.”
