Croydon will be joining in with a national celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community by staging a string of events throughout February.
This year’s theme for the annual LGBT history month is ‘religion, belief and philosophy’.
The council and local venues and community groups have published a detailed events guide available on the council website at www.croydon.gov.uk/lgbt.
“There’s a long history of stigma being attached to anyone who is not heterosexual – but fortunately we are increasingly living in more enlightened times and there are fewer barriers for member of the LGBT community to overcome. That said, there is still more prejudice and intolerance in the world than there should be, and events like these are designed to bring people together from all walks of life to recognise the fact that sexuality has nothing to do with ability or self-worth.”

Highlights of the timetable of events include:
– Friday 5 Feb (5-7pm): Civic launch at the Braithwaite Hall in Katharine Street. Live entertainment and refreshments provided (advance booking required, contact Carol.Sawyer@croydon.gov.uk).
– Friday 5 Feb (7.30 pm until late): LGBT History Month Big Night Out with live music, hot food and special edition pink Cronx ale at Matthews Yard (off Surrey Street).
– Friday 12 Feb (7.30pm): Comedy with Rosie Wilby – Is Monogamy Dead? Upstairs at the Spreadeagle Pub, Katharine Street (advance bookings 020 8781 1134).
– Monday 22 Feb (9.30-4.30pm): Supporting LGBTQ+ Young People conference – a day of talks, films and discussions aimed at professionals working with young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning.
There is also a film programme at the David Lean Cinema, with screenings of ‘The Danish Girl’, ‘Grandma’ and ‘Girl At My Door’. Tickets available here.
Throughout the month there will be a display in the Croydon Central Library and a history month trail at the Museum of Croydon, both celebrating the lives and achievements of the LGBT community over the years.
