Croydon Council leader welcomes Gatwick expansion plans

The Leader of Croydon Council has welcomed Gatwick Airport’s expansion plans to increase capacity and bring thousands of new jobs.

The airport has today (Thursday) announced it is consulting on proposals to increase runway capacity, boosting the economy by around £2bn and providing around 8,000 new Gatwick jobs and up to 20,000 for the wider region.

“I warmly welcome the news of this significant expansion plan at Gatwick, as Croydon has a crucial position as an economic and transport centre linking London and the South East corridor.

“The airport’s announcement today is good news for Croydon because it promises a major boost for the regional economy and thousands of jobs for residents in our borough and beyond. Added to Croydon’s £5bn town centre regeneration, this proposal would make Croydon an even more attractive place to live, work and invest.”

Councillor Tony Newman, leader of the council

Gatwick Airport is holding a public consultation event on the proposals in Croydon on 8 November at the Centrale shopping centre. For more information, visit the Gatwick Airport website.
