Croydon Council is marking a week-long national celebration of trees by planting 20 new cherry trees.
Ten new trees have been planted on Cherry Tree Green in Sanderstead as part of the council’s commitment to plant 3,500 trees by 2023, and a further ten are set to be planted in coming weeks.
The site was suggested by local resident Marianne Daniels, who got in touch with the council’s trees team.
They were planted just ahead of National Tree Week which sees a nationwide campaign to plant 1,000,000 trees.
Marianne said: “I am really delighted Croydon Council has supported my request to plant trees on Cherry Tree Green. The four different colours of cherry trees will be a welcome splash of colour.
“We will be holding a community litter pick on Saturday 30 November at 10.30am in order to tidy up the green followed by an informal photo at 11am. Litter picking equipment will be provided.”
Other plantings in Croydon saw council staff and the London Wildlife Trust plant 30 trees in Upper Norwood on 16 November and scouts plant 80 young tree whips at Pinewood in Shirley.
Croydon Council has plans to install 60 new planting bays along roads in the borough with residents’ suggestions of new locations welcomed.
“Trees can brighten any area be it a public park or alongside a road, all while helping tackle the climate and ecological emergency we all face.
“We are always looking for new sites for a tree so do get in touch if you know a suitable location.”
