Croydon’s Club Soda to debut new music at the ICA

Members of Croydon’s ‘Club Soda’, which creates opportunities for people with learning disabilities, will be performing an original piece of music at the Institute of Contemporary Arts on 17 March.

Tickets are now on sale on a ‘pay what you decide’ basis to see the debut of the composition, which was written and created by members of Club Soda at the Southbank Centre.

Entitled ‘A Glimpse of What’s to Come’, the song was recorded at the Southbank using only the natural acoustics of the spaces to create atmosphere and capture the mood of the building.

The recorded version is being kept tightly under wraps before it gets its first live play at the iconic ICA venue.

Croydon Council’s arts officer, Oliver Tipper, said: “’A Glimpse of What’s to Come’ was inspired by the brutalist architecture of the Southbank – the building that also inspired Croydon’s Fairfield Halls. The song is also heavily influenced by artists who performed there in the 60’s, most notably Pink Floyd and David Bowie.”

Three other commissions by groups of disabled musicians will also feature on the night and promises to provide a huge variety of performances, films, improvisation and installations.

Drake Music are behind the event. They are leaders in music, disability and technology, and give opportunities for disabled musicians to work with non-disabled musicians on an equal footing.

Cllr-Godfrey“It’s fantastic to see Croydon represented at this event. Club Soda has been a key part of our cultural offer for many years and importantly it’s a thriving success story. Club Soda gives a chance for local people with learning disabilities to get out and enjoy everyday things that so many of us simply take for granted.”

Councillor Timothy Godfrey, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport

The ICA event is entitled ‘Resonate’ and promises to let guests discover some of the new music and the cutting-edge artists and technology currently pushing musical boundaries.

As well as the Club Soda composition the night offers a live film soundtrack, featuring members of DM Collaborate, and experimental neo-classical metal, with live shredding on iPad and guitar.
