Dance and music extravaganza to celebrate Surrey Street reopening

A dance and music extravaganza will take place in Surrey Street on Saturday to celebrate the reopening of the market and the completion of the first phase of works.

The event will formally mark the return of the 700-year-old market to the heart of Surrey Street, after it temporarily relocated to North End while the first phase of the £1.1m improvement works got under way.

The public are invited to come down and visit the market ahead of the launch event, which takes place between 4pm and 10pm when a variety of entertainment will be on offer. This includes live music from local artists, Zumba, line dancing, as well as art workshops run by Rise Gallery, with cocktails and food also available.

As part of the second phase of improvements, a variety of street art is being installed in a bid to attract greater footfall to Surrey Street, boosting business for market traders and shops and to help make Surrey Street a new destination for art lovers.

Councillor Mark Watson, cabinet member for economy and jobs

“I am really pleased with the improvements that have been made to Surrey Street and the creation of a more modern and uniform looking market.

“I’d encourage everyone to come down on Saturday, to what promises to be a lively event, not only to enjoy the entertainment on offer and look at the new street art, but to help re-launch Surrey Street as an exciting destination for all to enjoy.”
