Don’t Mess with Croydon – Take Pride marks 200 successful prosecutions

A council campaign to crack down on littering and fly-tipping across Croydon reached its 200th successful prosecution on Tuesday.

Don’t Mess With Croydon – Take Pride launched in 2014 and has seen 200 offenders prosecuted through the courts for offences including dumping waste, dropping cigarettes, spitting and public urination and 36 vehicles associated with fly-tipping confiscated and crushed.

If someone is caught littering they are issued with a fixed penalty notice. The majority of these are paid but if someone refuses they can be taken to court.

The campaign’s 200th prosecution was Shani Cooke, of Onslow Gardens, Sanderstead. She ignored signs at the neighbourhood recycling centre in the Waitrose car park in Sanderstead and dumped a black sack of non-recyclable waste on the ground on 23 January.

She was convicted in her absence at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 14 August 2018 and sentenced to pay a £100 fine, costs of £100 and a £10 victim surcharge.

Reporting issues to the council is now easier than ever before thanks to a new app launched just over a month ago.

The Don’t Mess With Croydon app allows users to report 17 common issues to the right team at the council to fix the problem.

The app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store.

“Over the last four years Don’t Mess With Croydon has seen some major successes and helped people appreciate their communities.

“Day in, day out staff are working hard to keep the campaign running and make our borough a better place to live, work and visit.

“Helping look after our borough is everyone’s responsibility. Along with punishing litterers and fly-tippers we have introduced schemes including time-banded waste collections and community clean-ups.”

Councillor Stuart Collins, deputy leader – Clean Green Croydon
