Ensure you’re registered to vote in the general election

Residents are being encouraged to ensure that they are registered to vote in June’s general election.

With less than a month to the registration deadline, Croydon Council is reminding residents to make sure their name is included, so that they don’t lose their right to have a say in who forms the next parliament.

Monday 22 May marks the last day that eligible Croydon voters can add their name to the register to guarantee a vote on Thursday 8 June. Registering to vote is easy and shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.

It is particularly important that anybody who has changed address recently checks that they are registered. Anybody who was registered to vote in the EU referendum and has not since moved home does not need to re-register.

A wealth of information, including details of how to register to vote and check your registration, can be found on the council’s website at www.croydon.gov.uk/elections

The site also contains information on postal and proxy voting. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Tuesday 23 May, and for a proxy vote it is 5pm on Wednesday 31 May.

Research by the Electoral Commission indicates that, across Great Britain, recent home movers are far less likely to be registered than those that have lived at the same address for a long time. The research showed that 94% of people who have been at their property for more than 16 years will be registered, compared to 40% who have lived at an address for less than a year.

The same research indicates that while almost 95% of outright home owners are registered, this is the case for only 63% of private renters

Jo Negrini, chief executive Croydon Council

“Anybody who wants the chance to help shape the future direction of the country must be registered to vote.

“If they’re not registered, they won’t be able to vote next month, therefore we’re doing all we can to encourage our residents by making this a simple and easy process.

“It’s essential for a healthy democracy that everyone who’s entitled to vote is able to, and, for those who need to, registering is now easier than ever with the online registration system at www.croydon.gov.uk/elections.”
