One of the main roads through the centre of Croydon is to close over the Easter holidays so essential maintenance works can be carried out.
Wellesley Road will be closed southbound to traffic from 0001 Saturday 8 April to 0500 Tuesday 18 April, to enable London Trams to undertake vital maintenance of the tram tracks and road surface. During the same period Thames Water and Southern Gas Networks will carry out utility works at George Street and Station Road.
The section of track being replaced is between Lansdowne Road and the underpass, this will see the road closed southbound, 24 hours a day for 10 days. There will be no exit from Station Road onto Wellesley Road and a temporary two-way light will be set up at the junction of Wellesley Road and Station Road.
Southbound road traffic will be diverted via the A213 an A236, whilst southbound buses will be diverted via Lansdowne Road and Dingwall Road. Sydenham Road will temporarily be made two-way to facilitate deliveries during the closure.
There will be no tram service along the entire Croydon town centre tram loop, and trams will not run between East Croydon and Reeves Corner. Trams from Beckenham Junction, New Addington and Elmers End will terminate at East Croydon. No trams will run from Elmers End after 7.30pm on weekdays, 6.30pm on Saturdays and all day on Sundays. Passengers who usually get the tram at Elmers End are advised to walk or use local buses to Birkbeck or Arena instead.
The planned maintenance follows council improvements made to Wellesley Road earlier this year as part of the overall regeneration of the town centre. Croydon has invested £2m to make the road, which is one of the key routes through the borough, more pedestrian and cycle friendly.

“These works are the last of the current improvements to Wellesley Road and once completed will further enhance the excellent connections between retail, office and residential areas of the town centre.
“We recognise the closure will cause disruption, especially to those in close vicinity to the works but we have worked closely with TfL and Southern Gas Networks to keep these to a minimum. These essential works were timetabled in this way as traffic is typically lighter during the holidays. By co-ordinating these tram and utility works we aim to reduce the need for further closures at a later date.”
