Guest speakers, a photographic and creative arts exhibition, open-mic acts, live music and performance pieces will all feature in a central Croydon event to mark this year’s International Women’s Day.
Designed to honour the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women, IWD is being marked in the borough with an evening of entertainment in Matthews Yard, off Surrey Street.
This year’s IWD has the theme of Pledge for Parity which asks everybody –women and men – to pledge to help achieve gender parity more quickly, whether by helping women and girls achieve their ambitions, calling for gender-balanced leadership, respecting and valuing difference, developing more inclusive and flexible cultures, or by rooting out workplace bias. “Sadly, even in this day and age, there are examples of gender inequality.
“In many cases, that inequality isn’t a conscious decision, it’s more a question of tradition, and a blind adherence to outdated attitudes and opinions. Whatever the reason, it’s unacceptable, and it’s something we should all address.
“International Women’s Day tackles the issues head on, and the Matthews Yard event, in addition to being a fun night out, will highlight what’s being done in Croydon to close any gender gaps that might exist.”
