Game, set and match: Wimbledon hits the High Street

A pop-up screen beaming live action from SW19 arrived in CR0 this week, complete with deckchairs and a green carpet.  Relax with a refreshing glass of Pimms, courtesy of The Oval Tavern on the High Street and a punnet of strawberries and cream.

Games are being shown 11.30am-9pm Monday to Friday, where members of the public can pick their spot in the sunshine and watch live coverage on the Wimbledon Big Screen. Entrance is free.

On Saturday play will stop at 4:30pm, but will be back on the Big Screen from Monday 9 July, with play running until Sunday 15 July when the champions are crowned. Food and soft drinks are allowed in the viewing area, with alcohol available to purchase from The Oval Tavern on the High Street.

The Wimbledon Big Screen forms part of the Street Live programme from Croydon council and the Croydon BID, offering live music, sport, dance and theatre on the High Street.  The programme is delivering 48 days of activity over the summer, offering something a little different for shoppers, diners and those passing by.

“Whether people are in the Town Centre to shop or on their lunch break from work, they can enjoy Wimbledon served up live on the big screen. With the smashing weather we are currently enjoying, what better way to while away an hour or two? I do hope many people can catch some of the action and have an ace time!”

Councillor Oliver Lewis, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport

Matthew Sims, chief executive of Croydon BID said: “We want people to come out of there office with their colleagues and take their lunches to soak up the atmosphere in the High Street. Whether you are an avid tennis fan or just looking for a place to chill out, relax, take in the summer rays, and come down with your friends or family for a great two weeks of sporting action.”
