Improving public safety in Shrublands

Croydon has installed a temporary CCTV camera in Broom Road, Shrublands to enhance public safety at a crime hotspot.

Residents called for the camera following their concerns about drug dealing, anti-social behaviour, assaults and intimidation when using their local shops.

Councillor Hamida Ali, cabinet member for communities, safety and justice

“The camera’s purpose is to deter crime, and fear of crime, protect property and assist in maintaining public order.

“Residents have faced everything from moped theft to possession of imitation firearms, and more vulnerable people no longer come to the area as they are too afraid.

“We aim to help protect them, and to improve public safety.”

The new camera is one of 10 that will be deployed (initially for three months) to boost the council and partners’ ability to cover hotspot areas not covered by the existing fixed CCTV network.

A deployable camera has already been installed in Green Lane.
