Major improvements to East Croydon to take place

Major improvement works are to start this month to transform the area around East Croydon station, as part of the overall regeneration of the town centre.

The area surrounding the station and from George Street to Wellesley Road will be overhauled to make it more attractive and accessible.

There will be improved pedestrian access to the station, while George Street will be completely revamped with new paving and an improved street area.

Crossings will also be made simpler and easier to navigate at the junction with Wellesley Road.

Works are due to start on Monday, 19 January and are expected to last until December.

In the second phase of the works, which will take place later in the year, there will be a newly created pedestrianised space to the east of the station on Billinton Hill.

Connections from train to bus and tram will be significantly improved, with better links between eastbound and westbound bus stops.

In addition there will be an improved taxi rank and public ‘drop off’ and ‘pick-up’ points at the station.

Users of East Croydon station are warned of possible disruption at busy times throughout the duration of the works.

An open event will take place on the station forecourt between 4pm and 8pm on Monday, 12 January, to inform people about the works.

Temporary diversion routes for pedestrians, clearly signposted, will be in place throughout the works programme.

The £5.4m project is a collaborative effort between the Mayor of London, TfL, Network Rail and Croydon Council as part of the Connected Croydon programme which aims to improve Croydon’s streets, squares and open spaces.

“East Croydon is for many people the gateway to Croydon. It is not just one of London’s busiest interchanges but the country’s too.

“It’s therefore really important that the surrounding area is a high quality, accessible and welcoming environment.

“Croydon’s regeneration is well underway, and this is a key part of that process.

“While we appreciate there will be some short term disruption for those using the station, the long term benefits are huge, and will see vast improvements to the area around the station.”

David Rowe, head of borough projects and programmes at TfL, said; “We are delighted that our funding will help transform the areas around the main entrance to East Croydon station, making it more attractive and easier for passengers to use.

“Improved pedestrian ways and better connections between the train, bus and tram will significantly improve access to the station as well as help to boost the local economy.”
