New Addington and East Croydon are set to become the latest areas of the borough to get street vacuums as part of an ongoing £1.3m council investment in new cleaning equipment.
In August the council unveiled eight specialist vacuum cleaners in Croydon town centre, Broad Green and Norbury that collect litter more efficiently. The vacuums are more versatile than brushes and barrows, and even collect waste stuck between kerbs and parked cars.
Last week the council introduced one in Fieldway, and this month five more will start rounds in central New Addington, around East Croydon station and on Beulah Hill. The council plans to roll out 25 of these vacuums in total at locations around the borough by March.
Launched to support the council’s Don’t Mess With Croydon – Take Pride campaign that combines enforcement against fly-tipping with encouraging community clear-ups, the £1.3m council investment in better street cleaning equipment includes:
• Steam cleaning pavements in West Croydon
• Four new road sweeping machines to support manual street cleaning
• Three narrow 3.5-tonne cage tippers to clean hard-to-reach areas such as housing sites, narrow alleyways and fly-tips
• Two new refuse collection vehicles to collect orange waste bags
• Eighty solar-powered BigBelly bins, which take eight times the volume of a standard street bin using an automatic compactor to squash the rubbish.
