Young people are challenging some of the stereotypes they feel are faced by their age group in a photographic exhibition, which is on show at the former gaming shop Heroes and Legends, St George’s Walk, until Friday 19 August.
The youngsters, aged 12 to 17, gave up their Easter holiday time to work with professional photographer Katherine Leedale.
They learnt basic photography skills, such as lighting and editing, which they then put into use to take portraits of other young people.
They also studied interview techniques to ask their peers about experiences of being a young person in Croydon, and if they felt they were negatively stereotyped by adults.
Croydon College students were involved in the project, along with other young people who were supported to attend by Croydon Council’s early intervention support service.
The college provided studio facilities and equipment for the project, which was also supported by Kevin Zuchowski-Morrison, owner of RISE Gallery, who helped negotiate the St George’s Walk space.
The project was led by Croydon Council’s primary prevention team, with funding from the Safer Croydon Partnership.
