Release your creative side with a Calat art course

A recent exhibition of creative work by Croydon’s adult learners highlighted the wide range of artistic courses that can be accessed in the borough.

Scores of pieces of art were put on display at the Croydon Clocktower as a showcase for the talent of those who have recently studied on one of a range of programmes made available locally.

Croydon Adult Learning and Training (Calat) offers people the chance to develop skills in everything from painting and drawing to textiles, flower arrangement, and photography.

The award-winning service is operated by the council and over 70 years has become one of the largest adult education providers in the UK.

The Calat creative arts classes are aimed at anyone in the Croydon community and suit people who are looking to improve their employment opportunities or simply want to do something creative with their leisure time.

Practical painting and drawing classes for beginners to advanced learners are particularly popular and cover such things as life drawing or working with acrylics or watercolours.

As well as learning creative skills people can also take art history and art appreciation classes

Accredited (NCFE) courses in photography and floristry are available, as well as short non-exam-based courses for all levels.

“I’m always impressed when I see the standard of work achieved by students who take these courses. I’m sure this is because all the Calat teachers are very experienced and are experts in their subjects. We have centres right across the borough where people can study, and these creative sessions are on offer at Croydon Clocktower, New Addington and Thornton Heath.”

Councillor Alisa Flemming, cabinet member for children, young people and learning

All Calat courses can be enrolled online for September onwards at:  https://register.calat.ac.uk/website/CALATOLS/Courses.aspx
