Remembrance service returns to Fairfield Halls

Croydon’s Remembrance Day service is set to return to Fairfield Halls, as the borough pauses to remember the men and women who lost their lives during wars and conflicts.

The commemoration begins with a military parade from Mitcham Road Barracks to North End on Sunday 10 November at 9am. There it will be joined by other uniformed groups including the Scouts and Guides.

At 9.45am they will march from North End to Fairfield Halls via Park Street and Park Lane. The service of remembrance will take place in the Phoenix Concert Hall at 10.55am.

The service is open to the public and not ticketed, with doors opening at 10.30am and guests are asked to take their seats by 10.45am.The service will include a two-minute silence at 11am.

It will be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Croydon cenotaph on Katharine Street which will begin at 12.30pm. The Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Humayun Kabir, will lead the ceremony and lay the first wreath.

Other civic, faith and community leaders will then lay wreaths followed by members of the public. Anyone wishing to lay a wreath is asked to meet outside the Clocktower Café at 12.15pm.

Katharine Street, Park Street and Fell Road will be closed to traffic from 9.30am to 1.30pm on Remembrance Sunday for the service to take place.

More than 16million people died during The Great War, including 2,500 active-duty soldiers from Croydon.

Croydon will mark Armistice Day with a ceremony at the Croydon cenotaph at 10.55am. The ceremony will include a two-minute silence at 11am, marking exactly 101 years since the end of the First World War.

Katharine Street will be temporarily closed to traffic on Monday 11 November from 10.30am to 11.30am.
