Residents’ views sought on community energy scheme to repower Croydon

Could you or your community group get involved in renewable energy projects and create your own community fund?

The council is partnering with Repowering London to create opportunities for Croydon residents’ to lead on and deliver renewable energy projects aimed at reducing the borough’s carbon footprint.

Repowering London is a not-for-profit organisation specialising in empowering communities to own and generate their own renewable energy through the use of solar panels, converting energy from the sun into renewable electricity.

Profits from the scheme generated from the sale of electricity to the grid, go straight to the community who choose how the money is spent. The borough’s young people would also benefit from the project through a number of internship opportunities.

Next week, two events are taking place in Croydon where residents can find out more about the Repowering London scheme and learn how it has successfully worked in other boroughs such as Hackney, where the Banister House Estate solar installation is set to generate £28,000 towards their community fund over the 20-year life of the project.

The drop in events are taking place on Thursday 7 December at South Norwood Leisure Centre between 2pm and 8pm and on Friday 8 December at Thornton Heath Leisure Centre, also between 2pm and 8pm.

Councillor Stuart King, cabinet member for transport and environment

“This is a fantastic opportunity to reduce Croydon’s carbon footprint and to use renewable energy to help the borough achieve its long term target of reducing its emissions by 34% by 2025. I’d urge everyone to come along to the event and find out more about the benefits of bringing this kind of scheme to Croydon.”
