Update 9am – Council statement
A council spokesperson said: “Everyone was able to return to their homes yesterday evening when electricity was restored, and heating and hot water has been restored in all properties overnight.
“We would like to thank all residents for their patience throughout this incident and our community volunteers, partners and council staff for supporting those who were evacuated at the rest centre yesterday.
“The rest centre is now closed and Waddon Leisure Centre is open as usual today.
“Housing management company HML have coordinated repairs to a small number of properties affected by gas safety checks.
“Local businesses can also open as usual and trams are running in the area.
“Gas suppliers SGN will be looking at protective measures to reduce the likelihood of such an incident in the future.”

Update 19.20 – Council statement:
A council spokesperson said: “Electricity is currently being restored to all of the affected properties on Whitestone Way. SGN engineers are continuing to work on site to re-establish the gas supply to properties as quickly as possible.
“From 7.30pm this evening, the council and its partners on site will be supporting residents who wish to return to their homes – despite the current lack of heating and hot water – to do so. The rest centre will continue to operate to accommodate those residents who do not wish to go home until the gas supply has returned. We thank residents for their continued patience today.”
Update 16.15 – Council statement:
A council spokesperson said: “Work is continuing at the site of the Whitestone Way gas leak. SGN engineers remain on site carrying out safety checks in all of the New South Quarter buildings to ensure there are no gas leaks in any of the residential flats.
“We’ve been informed by SGN (the gas suppliers) that the building will be safe for residents to return to later this evening, once electricity has been reinstated on site. They expect the gas supply to follow early on Tuesday morning once the ruptured main has been replaced, as this was severely damaged by the collision.
“The council will continue to operate its rest centre for those residents who do not wish to go home until the gas supply has returned. Getting residents back in their homes remains a priority for the council and its partners on site and we thank residents for their patience.”

“Croydon Council officers remain on the scene in Whitestone Way supporting the emergency services and utility companies in their response to the ruptured gas leak. We thank residents for their continued patience.
“The A23 Purley Way is closed both ways between the Lombard Roundabout and Fiveways and bus routes 289 and 455 are on diversion. Surrounding roads affected by the closure include: Progress Way, Commerce Way, Drury Crescent, Turners Way, Mill Lane, Limes Avenue, Lodge Avenue, Godson Road, Courtney Road, Benson Road, Waddon Close, Vicarage Road, Kemble Road, Siddons Road, Cornwall Road, Theobald Road, Enterprise Close, Faraday Way, Galavani Way.
“There is currently no London trams service between Therapia Lane and Wandle Park and between Mitcham Junction and Reeves Corner.”

Council statement
Police are currently dealing with a potential gas leak on Whitestone Way, Waddon, following a collision between a car and an energy plant. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.
A council spokesperson said:
“The council is currently supporting officers from the Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade who are dealing with an incident at Whitestone Way. We have set up a rest centre for residents who have been evacuated as a precaution.
“All other residents in the area are advised to stay in their homes unless told otherwise by the police.”
