Street Live to bring a busy August to Croydon town centre

The beach is coming to Croydon at the end of August as Street Live continues to bring free fun for all the family to the town centre.

More than 15 tonnes of sand will be poured into High Street ahead of the August bank holiday weekend (24-26 August), with buckets and spades aplenty so families can enjoy the fun of the seaside without the need to get in the car or jump on the train.

And that’s not all – as Street Live organisers, Croydon Council and Croydon BID, have arranged a programme of events which will take place on High Street throughout the summer. It will kick off this weekend with two family-friendly dance events – Salsa + Bachata on Saturday 3 August and a Hip Hop Jam on Sunday 4 August between 1 and 7pm. These Street Live events will be led by creative dance company Scanners Inc.

Shakespeare comes to the pedestrianised space on Thursday 8 August, with a performance of Romeo & Juliet, at 7pm. To get free tickets for one of the Bard’s most famous plays, visit www.spreadeaglecroydon.co.uk

On Saturday 10 August, some of the world’s most iconic street performers are coming to Croydon, from Covent Garden. Between 12noon and 6pm there will be nine different acts performing a range of dazzling tricks and comedy.

On Friday 16 and Friday 30 August, Busk Stop continues, giving those in Croydon the opportunity to wind down and have a relaxing start to the weekend.

Saturday 17 August will see professional BMX stunt performers wowing crowds with dare defying tricks and demonstrations between 12noon and 5.30pm, with the pros on hand to offer advice and help Croydon’s BMX riders hone their own skills.

“Street Live has offered some fantastic fun for all the family so far this summer and August certainly looks set to be no different.

“I hope those living, working and visiting Croydon can get to the town centre and enjoy these brilliant events.”

Councillor Oliver Lewis, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport

Chief Executive Matthew Sims, Croydon BID, said: “Street Live is all about bringing energy and activity, encouraging people to enjoy the incredible variety of this summer’s event series will bring. So whether you’re into dance, theatre, high energy sports, or simply want to build a sandcastle, there’s something for everyone, at any age. Come and join us for an exciting August, right here on Croydon’s High Street.”
