Think ahead and apply early for starting school in 2016

Parents whose children are due to start school in September 2016 need to keep an eye on the calendar because the January 15 deadline for applications is approaching fast.
Despite a rapidly growing population Croydon Council’s school building programme is well on track to ensure there are plenty of places available across the borough. However parents who want to get their children into a nearby or preferred school do need to remember to use all six choices when applying.
This year there are four schools being expanded to admit more pupils. These are Heavers Farm, Christchurch, St John’s, and Chipstead Valley. Between them they will provide and extra 120 places thanks to investment from the council.
There are also two brand new schools now on the list for applications. These are the Krishna Avanti Primary School in Southbridge Road, south Croydon, and the Harris Primary Academy Purley Way. Between them the schools will take in 150 pupils each year.
Krishna Avanti Primary school will be the fifth addition to the successful Avanti Schools Trust. Alongside teaching the full curriculum, the school will offer practical 21st century spirituality rooted in class meditations, values-led lessons, and yoga to encourage reflection. This approach has led elsewhere to outstanding behaviour and excellent attainment in the trust’s existing schools. It will be a truly inclusive school with no faith criteria for entry – children of all faiths and none are welcome.
The permanent site will be a brand new building where Victoria House currently stands. For information of the open day on 23 October please visit www.avanti.org.uk/kapscroydon.
Harris Primary Academy Purley Way will be a new school located opposite the distinctive Wing Yip Chinese arch.
The Harris Academy charity, which is now set to run this site, is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary and already has several successful schools in Croydon. Their most recent new addition was Harris Primary Academy Haling Park, which opened in September 2014 and is already heavily oversubscribed with a waiting list of hopeful applicants.
Harris will be holding open day events at Haling Park for anyone interested in applying for the new Purley Way Academy. These will allow parents to see first-hand what will be on offer and will give a chance to speak to those of involved with creating the new school. They will be held on Thursday 19 November (9-10.30am); Monday 23 November (6-7.30pm); Wednesday 25 November (10-11.30am)

“This council is investing heavily each year to make sure every parent who applies on time for a school place for their child will get an offer. We are determined to keep building and expanding our supply of school places to match demand as Croydon’s growing popularity means that our population continues to grow every year.”

Councillor Alisa Flemming, cabinet member for children, young people and learning
