Croydon is in mourning following the tragic tram accident that took place today.
Emergency services, assisted by council support teams, are still at the scene dealing with the ongoing incident.
A reception centre for family, friends and those affected has been set up at Croydon Council’s town hall and is being staffed by emergency teams and support staff, into the night.
A phone line has been set up by British Transport Police (BTP) for relatives to call if they have any concerns. The number to call is 0800 056 0154.
The latest statement from BTP has confirmed seven people have died and 51 people are injured.
Local police teams and council neighbourhood safety officers are out in the community helping and advising local residents.
Leader of the council, Councillor Tony Newman said: “Croydon is in mourning today. I would like to send out my thoughts and sympathies to all those affected by this tragic incident.
“I have visited the scene this afternoon with the Mayor of London, and would like to say thank you to everyone who has been helping deal with this horrific ongoing situation and assisting those who have been affected. Their vital work cannot be underestimated.
“The council’s role will continue into the night and tomorrow to ensure that there is support for local communities and residents, particularly along the affected tram route.”
