Original artwork by Andy Warhol is to be displayed at the award-winning RISEgallery this September as part of Warhol Croydon, a month-long celebration of the world-renowned artist’s life.
Through a selection of artwork dating from the 1950s up to the 1980s, visitors will get a unique insight into the life and times of probably the most recognisable and iconic figure in the pop art visual art movement.
The ground-breaking exhibition will be complemented by giant homages to Warhol created by a dozen leading contemporary artists, including Ron English, Dan Cimmermann and Dotmaster. These will be displayed at prominent locations throughout the town and lit up at night.
The exhibition is just part of a programme of free events being delivered by RISEgallery with support from the Croydon Business Improvement District (BID) and Croydon Council.
Andy Warhol emerged from the poverty and obscurity of an Eastern European immigrant family in Pittsburgh to become a charismatic magnet for bohemian New York and, ultimately, to find a place in the circles of High Society.
RISEgallery founder, Kevin Zuchowski-Morrison said: “This year marks 30 years since Andy Warhol’s death so it is a fitting time to celebrate the life and work of such an iconic artist.
“We are really excited to be displaying some of his originals. It is clear from the participation of so many prominent present-day artists in our street exhibition that Warhol’s work remains as relevant and influential today as when it was created.”
The RISEgallery, which is located in St George’s Walk in the heart of Croydon’s ‘Cultural Quarter’, will open from 10am to 6pm seven days a week throughout the month. A special late-night opening of the gallery will take place on Friday, 8th September.
Warhol Croydon is the latest initiative of the RISEgallery which has previously brought exhibitions of work to Croydon by renowned artists Damien Hirst and Banksy.
In addition to the exhibitions, a series of talks, lectures, film and documentary screenings will also form part of the initiative, which is expected to attract tens of thousands of extra visitors into the south London town.
