Waste partnership leads to improved service

Reported fly-tips in Croydon are being cleared quicker thanks to a new partnership driving improvements for residents.

A contract between Croydon Council and Veolia sets a target for fly-tips reported to the contractor to be cleared within 24 hours. In May 97% of the 1,710 reported on-street fly-tips were collected in that window.

Before the new partnership began in March the target to clear reported fly-tips was 48 hours.

As part of the collection changes more than 200,000 new bins are being delivered and 75% of households will have their collection day changed.

The bins are designed to boost Croydon’s recycling rate to more than 50% by increasing the space available for paper and card and mixed recycling.

Replacements for damaged or lost bins and boxes will now be delivered within five working days.

A dedicated email address and phone line has been set up to answer residents’ queries. Anyone with questions should contact wasteservices@croydon.gov.uk or phone 0208 604 7282 between 9am and 5pm on week days.

“I’m pleased to see services for residents are improving, including a major decrease in the time it takes to clear fly-tips, and we will be driving standards higher over the coming years.

“The new contract is already bringing improved services for our residents and is designed to drive recycling rates up to more than 50% when the new domestic waste collections begin in September. Bin collections are changing to enhance the service and make it easier to recycle more.

“Collection days for most of our residents are changing. This new regime will improve the collection efficiency across the borough and reduce unnecessary journeys.”
