Work up a sweat in the sunshine and all year round

The roll-out of Croydon’s outdoor active spaces gathers pace as another gym opens for residents on Sunday 15 July in Grangewood Park, South Norwood SE25 6TW.

A special event will take place in the park from 1.30 – 3.30pm to officially open the gym to the public, with a personal trainer on-hand demonstrating how to safely use the equipment.

Croydon’s outdoor active spaces are a twist on children’s playgrounds, providing free and convenient areas to encourage people of all ages and abilities to be active and look after their health and wellbeing.

The easy-to-use outdoor gym equipment includes apparatus that allow users to exercise their arms, legs and other core muscles, as well as do cardio workouts to keep their heart healthy.

Croydon Council is investing up to £370,000 to install five active spaces. Mental health charity, the Matt Palmer Trust, is contributing £100,000 towards the costs. The gyms are also part-funded by grant wards that councillors receive to spend on local priorities.

Residents are already enjoying the outdoor gyms and some people have told the council, “Brightened my day seeing families exercising together”; “Great facilities and I love how it brings people together” and “I have changed my morning routine and we do the cardio after the dog walk before breakfast.”

As well as Grangewood Park, there are new outdoor active spaces located at Goldcrest Way in New Addington, Purley Way Playing Fields in Waddon and another already planned for King George’s Field in Selhurst.

“We are pleased to open another outdoor gym in Croydon. This is part of a wider initiative to support residents to move more and be active, which can help them to live longer and healthier lives. The gyms are also a great way to enjoy the borough’s parks and open spaces.””

Councillor Oliver Lewis, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport
