Youth bus offers safety advice

School pupils and young people can pick up safer travel advice while checking out Croydon’s new youth bus as the borough’s Choose Your Future campaign comes to North End this week.

The youth bus, offering young people a flexible space of their own to get help, advice and access support on a range of topics from personal safety to health and wellbeing, will be on North End from Wednesday to Friday as pupils head back to school.

Young people, especially those going to a new secondary school, will have the chance to pick up tips around safe journeys to school, looking after phones and other topics as the bus provides a reassuring presence in the town centre.

They will have the chance to talk about anything that concerns them with the council’s youth engagement team and other organisations including schools pastors, the sexual health team and more.

Supported by Croydon BID, the Metropolitan Police, Croydon Music and Arts and others the event will also give young people the chance to say where they’d like to see the youth bus making appearances across the borough.

“Hundreds of young people across Croydon are heading back to school and we want to give them all the best start to the new term.

“Choose Your Future will be helping everyone make the best possible start to the new term so if you’re passing on North End then please visit the team.”

Councillor Alisa Flemming, cabinet member for children, young people and learning

The youth bus will be on North End between 2.30pm and 5.30pm from Wednesday 4 September until Friday 6 September.

Choose Your Future was launched in 2017 to help empower and celebrate the borough’s young people and support them to make positive life choices. Since the start of the award-winning campaign, Croydon has experienced national-award a 13% decrease in knife crime and is now focussing on young people’s mental health and wellbeing.
