100 in 100 apprenticeship campaign gets under way

Three new apprentices have accepted roles at Croydon Council as a campaign to get 100 people into apprenticeships across the borough in 100 working days kicks off.

Starting this week and finishing on 20 December, the council is working with businesses and training providers within the Croydon Apprenticeship Academy to provide apprenticeships from GCSE to degree level, for residents in the borough.

The council marked the launch of the campaign by appointing three new apprentices to the organisation:

  • Fatima Traore, 22 – business administration apprentice in the learning and organisational development team
  • Kishon May, 22 – business administration apprentice in the learning and organisational development team
  • Dan Forrester, 22 – data analyst apprentice for the external funding team

Their roles are not limited to the department they are in, as the new apprentices will be given opportunities to work across the entire council allowing them to develop a wider skillset.

Apprenticeships offer a more practical approach to starting a career, and are open to all ages. Employers will also be able to increase productivity and reduce training costs by hiring and developing skilled and motivated local apprentices through the academy, as the council will cover up to 100% of training costs for small businesses.

Organisations including CALAT, Croydon College and JACE Training are helping provide apprenticeships for the borough’s residents, and the council’s job brokerage service, Croydon Works, is helping link candidates to the roles most suitable to them.

Fatima Traore, who is also a care leaver, said: “I’m passionate about learning, development and skill building. I want to help people gain more skills and I’m passionate about Croydon. I want to develop my own skills while supporting others to do their best for Croydon.

“There’s cultural diversity in Croydon and there’s a boom happening that makes Croydon an exciting place to be. I can’t wait.”

Dan Forrester, said: “I wanted to do something with maths and data analyst seemed like a good idea.

“I did work experience here and I enjoyed my time working here so I went for it.

“I’m excited to get started – especially the learning side, as you can increase your skill base while also having a job.”

“100 in 100 is an ambitious challenge and Croydon Council is taking the lead by working with local businesses to provide opportunities for our residents.

“Apprenticeships are not just for young people – they are also open to people who want to learn new skills as part of their job or those who want to change their career.

“We would like as many businesses as possible to be part of this campaign to give our residents the opportunity to work and build their career.”

Croydon Council’s apprenticeship programme has been recognised nationally, winning at both the enei (Employers Network for Equality and Inclusion) Awards and Personnel Today Awards last year. Our apprentices are the face of the council’s Choose Your Future campaign, which supports young people to make positive choices and gives them access to opportunities.
