As the COP26 conference draws to a close, we have today launched the latest in a series of local actions to tackle climate change by promoting sustainable living. Our new Community Reuse shop, the first of its kind in Croydon, will give local residents a chance to donate pre-loved items rather than throw them away, with all proceeds going back into the operation of the shop. This initiative to reduce waste is just one of many we have introduced to tackle climate change in Croydon, from new cycle lanes and school streets, to ground source heat pumps providing sustainable energy for homes. Covid-19 vaccinations
All children aged 12 to 15 in Croydon are now being offered one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and next week, parents and carers are being invited to attend a local webinar, to find out more about why the vaccine is so important for this age group. Hosted by NHS South West London CCG in partnership with the council, the live event will be held on Thursday 18 November 6.30-7.30pm. Those attending will be able to get their questions about the vaccine answered by clinicians from our local community. You can register for the event here. I know many people want to understand more about the benefits of the vaccine for our young people and this webinar is a great opportunity to find out more. I would encourage everyone who has questions to attend.
Croydon remembers
On Tuesday 9 November I stood with our community in New Addington to remember the victims of the Sandilands tram derailment, on the fifth anniversary of the tragedy. Croydon will never forget our residents who lost their lives that day – Dane Chinnery, Donald Collett, Robert Huxley, Philip Logan, Dorota Rynkiewicz, Philip Seary and Mark Smith. We will always stand united in support of their family, friends and neighbours, and all those who were injured or impacted. My heart goes out to them all at this very difficult time.
Remembrance Sunday
On Sunday we will come together again to honour the brave men and women from our armed forces, who have served and sacrificed their lives to protect the freedoms we all enjoy today. Our Remembrance Sunday service will take place at Croydon Minster, followed by a military parade and wreath-laying at the cenotaph in Katharine Street. The details are here and wherever you are at 11am on Sunday, I hope you will all join me in observing the two-minute silence so that together, we remember them.
