Croydon has approved a new Housing Supply & New Build Framework (HSNBF) to help build new homes and improve estates, an important step in providing a safe and sustainable supply of homes for Croydon residents.
Like many other London councils, Croydon Council is facing housing challenges. However, the council is proactively addressing these challenges and working hard to meet the growing need for affordable homes.
The guide, which was agreed at cabinet on Wednesday 20 November, is based on working together and careful planning, making sure everyone benefits. The new framework will help the council find ways to build more affordable homes, working with private developers and housing associations. It gives clear guidance on how the council will use its resources and build safe, warm, and dry homes – a key priority in the Mayor’s Business Plan 2022 – 2026.
The framework will explain how the council will review and assess new developments fairly and openly. A key part of the framework is the council’s commitment to being open with residents.
The council will work closely with residents to make sure their opinions are heard and share the steps behind each project. This will help build trust and create a better housing service. Any new housing projects will go through the council’s decision-making process and involve residents’ feedback.
The framework supports Croydon’s Housing Strategy 2024 – 2029, the Housing Asset Management Strategy 2024 – 2029, the Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy 2024 – 2029 and brings them all together to focus on making a more responsive and effective housing service, building more homes and makes sure everyone can have a say in shaping their neighbourhoods and homes.
“We know housing is one of the most important issues for our residents and that’s why it is a vital part of my business plan. This new framework is a big step in Croydon’s plan to invest in housing, raise standards, and improve the housing service for all residents.
“By involving residents, we are making sure that Croydon’s housing is not just about buildings but about creating places people are proud to call home.”
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
