Children’s services will continue to be delivered at 11 Croydon locations

Croydon Council will continue to provide much-valued help and support for families at all children’s centre locations – including Shirley and Purley Oaks – following this week’s cabinet decision.
This follows a public consultation where the council asked for residents’ views on proposed changes to some of its children’s centres, including an option to close Shirley and stop delivering children’s centre services at Purley Oaks. Having heard from families how important it is for them to be able to access support locally, the council will continue to offer children’s services at all 11 locations across Croydon, including both Shirley and Purley Oaks.
Instead, the council will make the savings it needs to make by changing the way it works to reduce management costs and reducing the frequency of some sessions at each site. Three main children’s centres will manage services for families at eight additional locations in the north, south and centre of the borough, according to what local people want and need.

“Supporting children and families, particularly our most vulnerable, is an absolute priority for us and our Best Start children’s centres are right at the heart of this.
“From stay and play sessions to more targeted support for families in need, they offer help and support that makes a real difference to parents and to children in their early years.
“We’ve listened to what matters most to our families and come up with a way to keep services running at all locations, including Shirley and Purley Oaks. While there will be changes to how often sessions run, these vital services for families will continue to sit at the heart of our communities, bringing together a range of services to help our children to thrive.”
