Croydon Council has launched the Cleaner Croydon campaign – working with residents, businesses and partners to help keep our streets clean and restore pride.

Cleaner Croydon is about encouraging everyone who lives in, works in or visits Croydon to do their bit, backed by council initiatives from clean-ups to crackdowns.

As part of the campaign, the council is launching a year-long programme to continue the ‘blitz cleans’ in district centres. The next district centre to benefit will be New Addington next week, followed by Addiscombe. This builds on the success of ‘blitz cleans’ in Norbury and Thornton Heath.

Cleaner Croydon will also include council-led task and finish groups taking action to respond to residents’ clean streets concerns, such as by removing abandoned vehicles. This follows successful partnership working with the DVLA to crackdown on such issues in Thornton Heath earlier this year.

The council is encouraging everyone to get involved with the Cleaner Croydon campaign and play their part in helping to keep the borough tidy.

Anyone can make a difference by reporting waste problems on the Love Clean Streets app – or by simply taking their rubbish home with them when they see that a bin is full. Residents who have more time can volunteer to become a Street Champion or join a Friends of Parks group.

The council will also be asking residents to think about how much waste they produce and encouraging them to reduce, reuse and recycle where possible.

Cleaner Croydon supports the Executive Mayor’s priority of a cleaner, safer, healthier borough – a place people are proud to call home.

“The Cleaner Croydon campaign is about working with residents, businesses and partners to help put the pride back in our borough.

“Litter, graffiti and fly-tipping affect everyone. They make areas untidy and can make people feel less safe. This matters to residents and to everyone who spends time in our borough.

“As part of the campaign, we’re listening to our communities about the clean streets issues in their areas and responding with a range of initiatives, from ‘blitz cleans’, to task and finish groups tackling abandoned vehicles.

“We’ll be asking everyone to think about the small things that we can all do to make a huge difference, such as taking litter home if a bin is full or thinking about how we can reduce our waste.

“We’ll also be asking businesses and landowners to take steps to keep their properties free from graffiti and fly-tipping, helping our high streets to thrive.”

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon

“Cleaner Croydon is a chance for everyone to get involved in helping to keep our borough clean and create a place that we can all be proud of.

“In Croydon, we are fortunate to have so many fantastic volunteers who go above and beyond to keep our borough looking its best. From our hundreds of Street Champions who organise local litter picks, to our Friends of Parks – we’ll be showcasing them and celebrating them all as part of our campaign.

“We can all get involved in repairing the ‘broken window’ effect and rebuilding pride in our borough. If you’d like to be a part of this, Cleaner Croydon is a perfect opportunity to find out more.”

Councillor Scott Roche, Cabinet Member for Streets and Environment

“There are so many reasons for local people to get involved in improving their local area – to feel the satisfaction of making a difference, to help make people feel safer, and to portray a better image of where they live.

“So much research shows the benefits of a cleaner, greener environment which our children and all residents in Croydon deserve. Anyone can get involved, from joining their local residents’ group, to reporting problems on the Love Clean Streets app or by becoming a Street Champion.

“THCAT was pleased to be a partner with Croydon Council in the blitz clean up along our high street and hope that all local residents, businesses and organisations will help keep the area clean and tidy.”
