Croydon Council’s planning service welcomes the news that the Planning Inspectorate has dismissed an appeal made by Bellway Homes (Thames Gateway) Ltd for the redevelopment of a site in Waddon.
A public inquiry was held into the redevelopment of the former Wyevale Garden Centre, at 89 Waddon Way, for 149 homes across buildings of up to five storeys.
Three out of four of the council’s reasons for contesting the appeal were upheld, with the planning inspector agreeing with the council on the shortcomings of the scheme.
The Council wanted to ensure that its aspirations for this area were delivered, which included the preservation and enhancement of a Grade II listed Purley diving stage and that the protected trees should remain rather than their proposed removal. The council also objected to the proposed design quality of the development and the lack of family housing.
The council’s objections reflect the Executive Mayor Jason Perry’s commitment to support sustainable development and emphasise design and character over density, as set out in the Mayor’s Business Plan 2022-26.
“We are very pleased with this positive result for our borough. It demonstrates the council’s planning service’s dedication to ensure that all new development in Croydon is of high quality and delivers for the local community.”
“It also shows how the council aims to protect the borough’s character and create vibrant places for people to live, work and visit and that it’s vital to us that there are sufficient well-designed family homes provided in the borough.”
“This appeal reinforces the message that in Croydon we are open to well-designed and sustainable development, with the high standards set by the council’s planning policies.”
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
