Council statement on publication of Penn report

Croydon will publish the Penn report tomorrow (24 February), following a unanimous decision by the cross-party appointments and disciplinary committee today.

The report will be published on the council’s website.

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, said: “I’m pleased that members from across the political divide have agreed that it is in the public interest to publish this independent report into the reasons for the failures that led to Croydon’s financial collapse.

“It’s taken longer than I would have liked, but our communities have a right to know what happened – understandably, people want answers, and as Mayor I am committed to doing everything in my power to get those answers and hold those responsible to account.

“Publishing the Penn report is an important step because it looks at the roles played by politicians and senior officers who were in power at the time.

“The committee’s decision to publish is an important milestone on our journey of improvement and is a step towards restoring faith and trust in our council and our borough for our staff, residents, businesses and partners.”

Councillor Stuart King, leader of the Labour opposition, said: “The decision to publish the Penn report has support from across the council chamber.

“We agree that residents have a right to know what led to the council’s financial challenges, so that we can make sure this never happens again.”
