Croydon Council is encouraging more residents and partners to have their say on the future of its Council Tax Support (CTS) scheme before the consultation closes on Tuesday 10 November. This forms part of Executive Mayor Jason Perry’s commitment to delivering a financially sustainable Council in which frontline services are protected.
As of 3 November 2026, the Council has received 2,073 contributions to the consultation, which is asking for feedback on proposals for the future of the scheme to help keep it fair, affordable, and sustainable.
Croydon Council’s scheme helps residents on low incomes pay their council tax. In 2025/26, the Council provided around £39m to residents. The scheme offers a higher level of support than many other London councils, but this also means it costs more to run.
Currently, the scheme prioritises support to disabled residents who are not working, followed by single parents with children under five and then other working-age residents. Some residents can have all their council tax paid for them.
By law, the Council must review its scheme every year. As Council Tax Support is an area of spend the Council controls, it must consider the cost as part of wider work to improve its finances, particularly as it remains under Central Government intervention.
Before any decisions are made, the Council wants to hear the views of residents, community groups, and partners. Their feedback will help the Council understand how any proposed changes could affect residents and shape recommendations.
Full Council will consider the options for the future of the scheme in February 2027. If approved, any changes would take effect from 1 April 2027.

“Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to respond. Council Tax Support makes a real difference to residents on low incomes, and we know that any potential changes will be a concern for those who rely on it.
“We inherited a Council in an exceptionally difficult financial position. Restoring its finances means facing some difficult choices, but I am determined that we do everything we can to support our most vulnerable residents whilst putting the Council on a sustainable footing.
“No decisions have been made. This consultation is an important opportunity to help us understand what the proposals would mean for you and your family. Please have your say so that your experiences can help shape the decisions ahead.”
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
